Israeli Denialist Hoax Tops Amazon List

IPS BOOKS: Books that aren’t blank.

UPDATE: Following a quality assurance review of the book, Amazon has removed it due to poor customer experience and feedback.

A racist Israeli book hoax is topping Amazon’s list of bestselling books in Israel. Assaf A. Voll claims his book, “A History of the Palestinian People: From Ancient Times to the Modern Era,” is the product of “many years of research” and “thousands of sources…in libraries and archives worldwide.” And, despite Voll’s false claim that his book is based on “the most comprehensive and extensive review of some 3,000 years of Palestinian history, with emphasis on the Palestinian people’s unique contribution to the world and to humanity,” there is one catch: all 132 pages of the book are deliberately blank.

The insidious hoax is a laughable attempt at spreading the Israeli myth that the Palestinian people are an invented fiction—think Golda Meir’s “no such thing as a Palestinian people.”

Although the Jerusalem Post reported “it remains unclear if the book’s multiple buyers were duped by the promising title or were in on Voll’s sardonic joke,” that such a screed could also earn a 3.9 out of 5 stars from 210 customer reviews is certainly no coincidence.

Voll promotes his racist politics on his social media accounts, such as mocking an appeal to aid Africans in Israel or rehashing the propaganda that Palestinian mosques incite violence, and encouraged his friends and followers to purchase the book and boost its ranking so they may “stick the Israeli flag on a pile of reporters’ corpses” Other right-wing sources promoted the book, and partisans left gleefully mocking reviews on Amazon:

A few reviewers attempt to correct the record. “This is not a book. Its blank pages erase thousands of years of Palestinian history and culture,” wrote one. “Blatantly racist,” wrote another. But, with 71% of the reviewers likely in on the joke, these comments are less visible.

Voll and his anti-Palestinian tribe might gloat about their achievement topping Amazon’s book list, but a complete forgery falsely advertised probably runs contrary to Amazon’s rules and ethics. “If Not Now,” an anti-occupation activist group dubbing itself the Jewish Resistance, has encouraged a campaign to remove the book from Amazon.

If the Palestinian people truly did not exist, one wonders why Voll and his racist ilk try so hard to erase them. Check our Bookstore to see for yourself.

  1. If anyone else said something like this about Jews they would be accused of anti-semitism. But when Jews abuse and minimize Palestinian history like this, who are really the racists and bigots?
